In emergency situations these systems are used to divide a building or premises into separate zones and, during an evacuation, zones in the building are ‘spoken to’ individually, several at a time, or all at once. People in the specific zone are informed – via the spoken word – what is happening and what to do. The control of the evacuation is either via pre-recorded messages and/or by emergency fire microphones. These are available to both authorised personnel and to firemen. The system itself is continually monitored by a built-in checking mechanism which ensures that, when it counts, the system will work.

In an emergency the system is activated by a fire detector or a ‘break-glass’ box. The fire panel activates the system and emergency messages are broadcast to areas at risk. Areas of high risk are informed of necessary action – for example they are requested to evacuate via a certain route. Those which are not considered high risk are ‘alerted’ to the emergency and thereafter undergo a phased evacuation. Additionally, real-time information may be broadcast by the emergency services to prevent people moving into danger. The end result is that the management of an emergency using these evacuation system results in a calm, controlled and safe evacuation.
